Future-proofing a giant: Geldof gives BP’s Tank TK 001 a new lease on life
What does it take to bring a 1965 icon into the future? At BP Raffinaderij Rotterdam BV, the answer is Geldof. Their massive tank TK 001, standing 19,6 meters high and stretching 79,3 meters in diameter, is getting a complete makeover, and they are trusting us with that mission. Soon, the tank’s original single-deck floating roof will be replaced with a modern double-deck external floating roof (DD-EFR), boosting both its safety and its durability to modern standards.
Our scope goes well beyond the roof. From reinforcing the foundation to expanding manholes and installing advanced foam systems, every detail has been scrutinized and redesigned to meet today’s demanding requirements. New access points, reinforced wind girders, and additional safety features like cage ladders and walkways ensure TK 001 is both robust and accessible.
With BP recently completing internal cleaning, our team is now set up for the next stages. Double-deck roof construction is underway, temporary walkways are up, and we’re actively conducting bottom and wall repairs. By opting to renovate instead of demolishing and rebuilding, BP gains a solution that’s faster, more cost-effective, and more sustainable—delivering long-term value without the footprint of new construction.
This project is a testament to Geldof’s commitment to providing resilient, sustainable solutions designed not just for today, but for decades to come.
